Food For the Dead

Last night, the dead awoke dressed in lacy finery and performing feats of daring deadly might. The Aloft Loft's Homecoming Dance of Death was a total riot with acts which included contortionists, jugglers, and strong men flinging their girlfriend high into the air.

My favorite acts included a girl with pillows stuffed down her turquoise Lycra jumpsuit twirling and knotting herself around 30 foot dangling red silk cloth to the tune of Fat Bottomed Girls, as well as the Homecoming Queen herself, flying through the air with the greatest of ease, twirling around dead on the flying trapeze.

Acts were interspersed through the night, to allow guests to mingle and partake of the complimentary spiked punch and food between acts. That's were we came in.

Our very Forkable friends, Amber and Laura help with the set up.

When my friend Shayna, Aloft's Artisitic Director, asked me if I could make some food for her party, I knew it was going to have to be something special. Her events always make an impression so I wanted to do the same with the food. Forkable pulled out all the stops. Here are some deadly treats to tempt even the most anorexic high school cheerleader zombie.

White Chocolate covered marshmallow ghosts. Each with their own little message. This little guy says "Taxes owed $8000 Now!" AHhh scary!

Of course we had platters of the finger and eyeball cookies we previously posted about.

We had wrapped hot dog spiders.

The deviled eggs were supposed to look like the Great Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings. I don't know if I succeeded; you be the judge.

Can you tell which is which. I know; it's a hard boiled situation. Te he.

I think of all the things we made, nothing got as much attention as the Brain Cake.

The brains were red velvet cakes covered with white chocolate. These were really hard to make (as I am not a super skilled baker). I had to make the chocolate thick enough to release from the mold, but I knew because of this, they would break apart when I cut them.

I left them untouched as table centerpieces for most of the night, but everyone wanted to see inside them, so I finally cut them up. I tried heating up the knife to melt the chocolate as it cut, but they still sort of broke up. They were tasty though!

Here are more pictures of our treacherous treats.

Amber in German gear, and Myself as a Mad Scientist on the trapeze.

We had a fabulous time. Thanks to all my fabulous friends especially Amber for helping me get this all together. So all the dead have been put to bed. What's next on the party list... I'll keep you posted.

Eggs Cubed

How do you serve Deviled Eggs at a party? The little stinkers have a round bottom so they have a tendency of rollin over. You can use a tray if you're lucky enough to have one. My Grandma gave me a beautiful one for my birthday a couple years ago. If you're one of the sad masses without, you have two options. You can go out and throw down some money on buying one.

Or you can purchase the fabulous EGG CUBER!

For a small chunk of change you can be the owner of this little doohickey which guarantees a flat bottom and keeps your deviled eggs sittin pretty.

Deviled Eggs: Devilishly Easy

Deviled Eggs are always a hit at any party. They're easy to make and lots of fun to eat. Here is a quick recipe to help you egg it up at your next party.

Deviled Eggs:
makes 48

Place 24 eggs in a bowl of water and bring to a boil. Allow to boil for about 10 minutes and then turn burner off. Leave eggs in water until water has cooled a bit. Drain eggs and sit.

When the eggs are cool to the touch, peel shells of the eggs and discard. Egg shells are great for the compost pile or can also be used to sharpen blades in your garbage disposal. If you have neither of these just discard.

Check out this guy, its a twin!

Cut hard boiled eggs in half. Scoop out the yolks and place in mixing bowl. With a blender mix into the eggs:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup honey mustard
  • 1/4 cup spicy mustard
  • 2 tsp of paprika
  • 1-2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp horseradish

Egg yolk filling in my mixer.

These measurements are approximated. Taste the filling as you go along. If you like it more spicy, add more paprika or hot sauce. Make sure your filling is nice and smooth with no lumps.

Decorative tip on my pastry bag makes the filling so attractive!

I like to use a pastry bag with a decorative tip to add filling to the egg whites, but you can just spoon it in. Once the egg whites are filled, you can garnish with paprika, olives, capers or whatever you wish.

And you're done. Eat up!
